TEAMLAB PHENOMENA ABU DHABI GRAND OPENING

Bild Studios brought audio-reactive magic to what TPi Magazine calls the world’s largest reactive screen for teamLab Phenomena's grand opening.

HQ Worldwide Shows commissioned Bild Studios to provide real-time audio-reactive visuals for the grand opening of teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, a 17,000-square-metre multisensory art destination located in the Saadiyat Island Cultural District.

HQ Creative briefed the Bild team with the goal of highlighting teamLab's philosophy of experiential art—feeling immersive and emotional rather than presentational and informational. They tasked Bild with achieving this by blending boundary-pushing technology, sound, architecture, and live performance into a piece worthy of the venue's inauguration.

From the outset, Bild treated their central challenge—a 120m x 30m digital canvas rendered at 13,000 x 2,400 pixels—as much more than a passive display, centring their visuals around an original composition performed live by world-renowned pianist Ludovico Einaudi. Bild’s systems responded naturally to the piano and live cues, blending with pre-rendered sequences to create a fluid, performance-led visual narrative.

Coordinating with multiple teams to craft a light-tight plan for how the visuals should appear, they chose Notch as their nucleus from pre-production onward, confident it was the only tool that could meet the challenge at the scale the vision demanded. They used Notch in the previs stage to run live screen-share sessions with stakeholders—demoing every creative iteration and implementing feedback on the go—then during production to power audio-reactivity across every ebb and flow of Einaudi's performance, with waves of particles circling the pianist and surrounding museum environment.

Complementing Bild's digital production, the wider team integrated projection mapping, drone choreography, fireworks, and architectural lighting into an all-encompassing sensory experience for royals, cultural representatives, and other leaders. The show was such a success that the client extended it for an additional night.

One of the biggest challenges was delivering stable, responsive real-time visuals across such a massive canvas at extreme scale and resolution. The sheer size of the display required careful optimisation, testing, and precise synchronisation to keep everything fluid and reactive throughout the performance. Notch was absolutely critical in this process.
